About the Restaurant

The location of the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant was, up until 1884, a private residence, when it was sold and became a retail outlet - at least the ground floor was and the first floor became offices. Just prior to World War II it was sold again to become a restaurant (exactly when the upstairs area was turned into a restaurant is unclear) which, during the war, we believe was know as the "Home from Home", which was used by the men left behind after their wives and children were evacuated to England, as a meeting point to enjoy a cooked meal.

Since the war it has gone through many changes of name and style of restaurant before ending up as the Indian restaurant "Taj Mahal" here today. The first recorded name after the war was the "New Shamrock Restaurant", followed by the "Capri Restaurant" with the "Morocco Cafe" downstairs. The the "Campania", followed by the name most local people remember, the "Pam-Pam Grill", this changed its name to the "Home from Home" (no connection with the war years name) before finally changing into the "Taj Mahal".
